No, not like doing “the splits” … as you probably know, with my flexibility I am NOT qualified to give you advice on that 😂

A training “split” is basically how you organize you training week.

For a long time, the prevailing method came from the bodybuilding community, and would generally involve assigning each muscle group one day of the training week.  For example:

  • Monday = chest & shoulders
  • Wednesday = back
  • Thursday = arms
  • Saturday = legs

Or some variation like that.

While that is popular amongst bodybuilders, it is generally a poor choice for overall health and athleticism.

A bodybuilder’s only real goal is to get bigger (more muscular) and close to competition to then get super lean.  However, things like strength, mobility, endurance, speed, and power are not important to their goals … but those things SHOULD BE important to YOUR goals.

Basically I’m saying that if literally your only goal is to get bigger and more muscular with no concern for endurance, mobility, strength, and so on, then the bodybuilder plan could probably work.

However, if you’re like me and you want a balance of all the things – to feel strong, to have ample energy, to not get winded easily, to move well, then training like a bodybuilder is a poor choice.

Check back later this week for some more information and some examples of better choices for training splits.
