The ultimate guide to your first year of Jiu Jitsu!

We know that starting Jiu Jitsu can be scary and overwhelming.  You do not know a lot of the terms, positions, moves, you don’t know what to expect in a given class, and sometimes you don’t even know the objectives of what you are supposed to be doing.  We created our Foundational 24 (F-24) curriculum specifically to solve those problems:

  • We want to help you know exactly what to expect in class
  • We want you to know what exactly are the highest priority techniques for you to learn in your first year
  • We want to help you understand what the objectives are from a given position or scenario
  • We want to help you get comfortable with the terminology and vocabulary used in Jiu Jitsu
  • We want to create a resource for you to review all of this outside of class time, because we know there is an upper limit to how much information you can retain from any one in-person class

If you train with us in person this is the exact curriculum you will learn over your first year.  You can use the online video course to know what to expect in classes, and to review the material afterwards to ensure you remember everything.  If you live too far away to train with us in person you can still use this course to guide your first year of Jiu Jitsu to ensure you have the optimal foundation established.

What will you learn?

It takes longer to get a black belt in Jiu Jitsu than any other martial art – it is common for it to be 10+ years.  There is so much material to learn and become proficient in that it can be daunting to figure out where to even start.

We know that especially for beginners it usually feels overwhelming, and sometimes even scary.  A huge part of this is due to not knowing what to expect in class, especially your first few classes.  If you think about it, if you were to take a high school or college class, on the first day you are usually given a syllabus of what you will be learning over the term, and it helps you understand what the road map looks like and gives you a comfort of knowing what to expect.

Our F-24 Curriculum does that same thing for you when it comes to Jiu Jitsu.  You will know exactly what to expect, what you will be learning, and what the big picture looks like.  You will no longer feel lost and unsure of what to expect.  If you want to make your first year of Jiu Jitsu more fun and more productive, this online course is for you.

To give you the maximum benefit from this online course, not only do we teach you “live” as if you were in class, but we show both gi and no gi adaptations to every technique, and include slides with photos, arrows, and written text to really hammer home the most important details of each technique.  These slides are valuable to screen shot on your phone so you can access them quickly as a refresher of key details right before class.

Jiu Jitsu Testimonials

I joined Industrial Strength in 2015 with the original goal of losing weight and getting fit. Through consistently attending Brazilian jiu jitsu and kettlebell classes I exceeded my goal, losing over 50 pounds and getting in the best shape of my life. Through that process, I also fell in love with jiu jitsu. When the pandemic restricted access to gyms, not being able to train in the gym was hard, but having access to the Industrial Strength On Demand jiu jitsu and kettlebell courses allowed me to continue my training at home, giving me the same top-notch instruction as I experience in person. Regularly training with Industrial Strength whether in-person or online will get you results!

The BJJ fundamentals course is a great resource for both students new to jiu jitsu and veteran grapplers looking to brush up on the basics. The video library is well organized and covers all the important positions you need to learn during your first few years, and being able to pause, rewind, and rewatch at your leisure is a huge benefit when it comes to really absorbing the material. With Tony providing excellent, easy to understand instruction, I can’t recommend the BJJ fundamentals course enough.

-- Brian

Industrial Strength’s BJJ video instruction has helped me keep my mind on the mats when things like injuries and the pandemic forced my body to be off the mats for a long time. The attention to detail, step-by-step breakdown, and organized curriculum all help reinforce techniques in my head in case I miss anything in real time during live in-class instruction.

-- Amar

The BJJ Fundamentals course has been so helpful in improving my game by reviewing and refreshing fundamental moves and concepts while introducing new ideas/moves at a pace that is easy to digest and fun to learn. The course has also been instrumental in helping me hone and grow my skills as a coach. So whether you are brand new to the sport or a seasoned athlete, the course has something for everyone!

Industrial Strength’s online Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals course is like a comprehensive study guide for what we need to know to be successful as new students of jiu jitsu. I regularly watch and rewatch their instructional videos to sharpen my understanding of the details of specific moves from each position. I’ve noticed a big improvement in retaining information, and in my ability to apply what I’ve learned on the mats. I highly recommend this online resource for someone who is looking for a clear and structured approach to beginning jiu jitsu.
